The Post In Which I Own My Prejudice.

I had two different groups of participants to facilitate this past week. The first were a group of high school peer leaders (seniors) from New Brunswick, NJ, where 400 students began in their class and just 175 will graduate in June. The second were from a wealthy private school in Manhattan. The first group was at my place of work to get stuff done; they chose their co-leaders for the year on day two of three. The ninth grade Manhattanites were in Blairstown to "bond." When New Brunswick left, I knew each and every name, and the colleges they were applying to. I knew where they worked after-school, what got on their nerves, who had a tendency to lead and who to follow. Of the second group, I couldn't tell you names. Didn't retain the neighborhoods, save one Hoboken and one Spanish Harlem in the bunch. The girls were nice, but easily distracted. They're young, 14. They also have been to more foreign countries (mine: 0), go on vacation every summer, attend camp for weeks on end, and prefer salad to fast food. Most of them. Some are on scholarships, but overall these girls were a challenge for me. I didn't grow up poor. I was in the upper-middle class in the suburbs of D.C., living in a house that was practically palatial. But we bought our piano used from the neighbors down the street. We grew our own vegetables, tomatoes, strawberries. I split wood with a sledgehammer and bomb, for crying out loud! Prince George's County, MD was (is?) the capital of Afro-American wealth in the States. White flight led to being half-white when I was six and 85% black by the time we moved when I was 16. I relate more to the kids who came in the beginning of the week, minority-majority students who often needed to overcome gang and drug culture from D.C. as their families escaped into the suburbs. I went to schools where the stalls could be looked over, where there were parenting classes for the teen mom's-to-be, where a student once had her head bashed in by a sink behind my high school. And so, even though I'm sporting a hipster scarf like the Manhattanites, and faced few obstacles to graduating high school, applying for then atttending college, I don't feel the same as those girls. I feel jealous, angry, unsophisticated, and befuddled: how do I challenge you? What are your struggles? And how do I help you get something out of experiential education? A question I'm working on answering at the moment. To be fair, October through May I will be working in my schools with our Primary Service Population, "underserved urban youth," who are the groups who I find easier a repor with. I've experienced racism as a white person, and it wasn't fair, it didn't feel good (though I'm happy I've had the experience of being a minority, if it makes sense). It's not fair to pass that prejudice on to my own pale students now. It's not appropriate, logical, or productive.

How many blueberries?

I survived my first foray into canning as an adult a few weeks ago. My co-worker/friend Christine and I, along with fellow co-worker Nancy, all picked wild blueberries in some harrowing mosquitoes off of the Appalachian Trail. I also canned some Shiro plums (read: the very pretty bright-yellow Japanese variety) with lemon. More pectin as thickener next time, but overall it was a very pleasing experience. We picked for 4.5 hours, yielding 18 jars of what I am calling "Wild Organic Free-Range Blueberry Jam" from the hills of the Delaware River Valley. Truly a feat considering how tiny the wild berries were, I think. I also deemed it was time this month to invest in a new climbing harness, a tent, sleeping bag, and pad of my own. I paid all of this month's bills already, and October will be lean for me to save up for my Association for Experiential Education conference in the beginning of November, which will be around $750, we think.

The moment

The moment you suggest your product/lifestyle/service is hip and contemporary, it is neither. New article on hipster culture in AdBusters. Hiked seven miles yesterday, getting friends tonight at the train station, tomorrow more outdoor sport with my friend Angie. Doing great at the new job, feeling great about ending out a tough tough week. Today I'm just trying to get a ton of cleaning and neatening up done because I'm getting some roomies come the mid-month, all the women staff members will be moving into the other half of my house, so the bathroom and kitchen areas need to be spotless and ready for company. I'm excited to have some company, but I do love having my own side of the lake. I can't believe how hard it is for me to find some company here in Blairstown, New Jersey. Most guys aren't my age, and I'd love to get into the city a lot more, meet more people. I miss my blogging a lot, my art a lot. My professors, my school. It's strange to be out here alone on this big blue ball.

I caved.

I laid down $300 for a 16 gig iPhone today at AT&T in Allentown, and I'm excited for the prospect of actually getting service at my house. My current case preference is a Treadz case by iFrogz, and I'll be getting a new pair of headphones next week, something rugged, to go with it. I'm several thousand in the hole, what's a few hundred, it seems? As I work longer at Princeton, I'm looking forward to paying off the credit card bill with whatever remains after monthly expenses are calculated, it should take me a year and a half, then it's saving and paying off the car early from there.

Are there any mensches out there who know the yiddish word for a "pack rat" or someone who always has lots of bags full of schach (stuff)?

Apparently, I Blogged too soon

Two nights ago, a juvenille black bear who lives in the Delaware Water Gap area hit the car I was riding in. I have no explaination for this, and I must admit that I have a hard time working it out in my head myself, but that bear ran right into Afton's passenger door, and upon leaving the Blairstown Inn, our favorite drinking hole with A-Treat birch beer on tap, we saw the true extent of the damage. There was no mailbox nor trash can. It was a bear. Today I am actually taking photos of the place where I live, hooray! Especially my garden, which grows quite well these days. I'm spending all day in ipod land and cleaning and organizing. Best three days off ever. Except for that bear thing.

I have yet to be eaten by a bear.

Even in the center of the western world, New York City, I find a little bit of heaven barefoot in the grass in Central Park, chomping on a Snow Cone. As I relaxed on July 4th, Independence Day, with my faux-family in Allentown, PA, I came to the realization that I long passed my own "independence day." And yet, somehow, I am still not entirely dependent. I find myself relying on others now more than ever, now that I am part of the Real World. This morning I woke up thinking I was driving someone just 45 minutes away to a NJ Transit stop in Dover. Shortly thereafter I found myself in Newark on a train to New York City, without earphones, wireless card, or cellular phone. I'm heading back out on the subway to Penn Station just as soon as I can remember how to get there and rest my toes. I spent $4 on the ticket to NY, $2 on the subway, and $5 on the Met (don't go to see the Tara Donavan piece, it's unimpressive at best, and if there were more air currents in the room it might be a little more lively.) Artscape is going on in Baltimore, and here I am, miles away and a world apart from all I know and love, and I'm doing just fine okay at that. ...And now, just hours later, I'm back on the porch of my cabin, Twins, enjoying a hazy late afternoon and watching the young phoebe's that nested atop my porch light hawk and hover in pursuit of some unlucky flies and such. Drinking white birch beer and enjoying the midsummer breeze, I've got to say that New Jersey, thus far, has become quite good to me.

Neighborhood News

So this week I've seen speckled and spotted salamander, also a rabid raccoon and my first bear, dozing in a tree. This morning one of my co's Nancy spotted a bear in the tree by the dining hall, about 200 feet away, which we soon realized was a mama and two adorable monkeyesque cubs, wreaking havoc on this poor tree! It was lovely! And that's the latest news on this end!
