The moment

The moment you suggest your product/lifestyle/service is hip and contemporary, it is neither. New article on hipster culture in AdBusters. Hiked seven miles yesterday, getting friends tonight at the train station, tomorrow more outdoor sport with my friend Angie. Doing great at the new job, feeling great about ending out a tough tough week. Today I'm just trying to get a ton of cleaning and neatening up done because I'm getting some roomies come the mid-month, all the women staff members will be moving into the other half of my house, so the bathroom and kitchen areas need to be spotless and ready for company. I'm excited to have some company, but I do love having my own side of the lake. I can't believe how hard it is for me to find some company here in Blairstown, New Jersey. Most guys aren't my age, and I'd love to get into the city a lot more, meet more people. I miss my blogging a lot, my art a lot. My professors, my school. It's strange to be out here alone on this big blue ball.

I caved.

I laid down $300 for a 16 gig iPhone today at AT&T in Allentown, and I'm excited for the prospect of actually getting service at my house. My current case preference is a Treadz case by iFrogz, and I'll be getting a new pair of headphones next week, something rugged, to go with it. I'm several thousand in the hole, what's a few hundred, it seems? As I work longer at Princeton, I'm looking forward to paying off the credit card bill with whatever remains after monthly expenses are calculated, it should take me a year and a half, then it's saving and paying off the car early from there.

Apparently, I Blogged too soon

Two nights ago, a juvenille black bear who lives in the Delaware Water Gap area hit the car I was riding in. I have no explaination for this, and I must admit that I have a hard time working it out in my head myself, but that bear ran right into Afton's passenger door, and upon leaving the Blairstown Inn, our favorite drinking hole with A-Treat birch beer on tap, we saw the true extent of the damage. There was no mailbox nor trash can. It was a bear. Today I am actually taking photos of the place where I live, hooray! Especially my garden, which grows quite well these days. I'm spending all day in ipod land and cleaning and organizing. Best three days off ever. Except for that bear thing.

I have yet to be eaten by a bear.

Even in the center of the western world, New York City, I find a little bit of heaven barefoot in the grass in Central Park, chomping on a Snow Cone. As I relaxed on July 4th, Independence Day, with my faux-family in Allentown, PA, I came to the realization that I long passed my own "independence day." And yet, somehow, I am still not entirely dependent. I find myself relying on others now more than ever, now that I am part of the Real World. This morning I woke up thinking I was driving someone just 45 minutes away to a NJ Transit stop in Dover. Shortly thereafter I found myself in Newark on a train to New York City, without earphones, wireless card, or cellular phone. I'm heading back out on the subway to Penn Station just as soon as I can remember how to get there and rest my toes. I spent $4 on the ticket to NY, $2 on the subway, and $5 on the Met (don't go to see the Tara Donavan piece, it's unimpressive at best, and if there were more air currents in the room it might be a little more lively.) Artscape is going on in Baltimore, and here I am, miles away and a world apart from all I know and love, and I'm doing just fine okay at that. ...And now, just hours later, I'm back on the porch of my cabin, Twins, enjoying a hazy late afternoon and watching the young phoebe's that nested atop my porch light hawk and hover in pursuit of some unlucky flies and such. Drinking white birch beer and enjoying the midsummer breeze, I've got to say that New Jersey, thus far, has become quite good to me.

Neighborhood News

So this week I've seen speckled and spotted salamander, also a rabid raccoon and my first bear, dozing in a tree. This morning one of my co's Nancy spotted a bear in the tree by the dining hall, about 200 feet away, which we soon realized was a mama and two adorable monkeyesque cubs, wreaking havoc on this poor tree! It was lovely! And that's the latest news on this end!

Whew. Let me tell you, it's already been a busy weekend, and it's only Sunday. Friday night I had Shabbat dinner in Allentown, PA, and I hit the home & garden center and Target for more athletic wicking bras and tops and plants for our newly-delegated garden. All said and done I spend a little over $200, most of it on the C9 Champion gear from Target, but I got some very nice racer-backed tops which will serve me well over the course of the summers and at the climbing gym. I even got a blue one, a color I don't wear often and I'm not sure why because it brings out my eyes. Also, I got a small hydration daypack which is big enough for a rain layer, a sweater, and a couple field guides, as well as 2 litres of water, which is way better than my old jansport bookbag that got me through four years of high school. One of my co-workers and I decided to pool our respective lands and garden together. We have asian hot peppers, roma tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, cukes, watermelons, canteloupes, beans, and more in the ground. Her dad came up and tilled the soil, and I gardened barefoot, the soft earth between my toes and bringing back memories of working the garden with my mom when I was a kid. Christine and I were ambitious, we packed it in tight and I do hope that it proves slightly successful before the end of the growing season, as it is somewhat late to be planting. Tomorrow I'm heading up quite early to Princeton's campus to do the Human Resources thing. I'm also dropping off a ton of CPR and AED training supplies at our 350 Building, which houses also Outdoor Action, the outdoor club at Princeton. I've never seen an Ivy league school, so I'm pretty excited about that, even as I'm happy to NOT have had that experience for my four years of undergrad. Looks like a friend or two will be coming up to visit me in the next month. I've got to file two time off requests, one for a long weekend, one so I can do the doctor-dentist thing here in NJ. I also have another day off on my way because I'm missing the one everyone else gets tomorrow. Each month I get two paid vacation days, and I think two paid sick days? I'm also signing up for insurance tomorrow, which is exciting. I've never had my own insurance before. Photos as soon as I can, really. Oh! Also, I saw a rabid raccoon and a real live black bear before I got my t-shirt and frisbee at the completion of staff training (I hate frisbee cause I'm bad at it, but I'm getting better). It was a fitting end! Today I'm cleaning up my house before driving to Allentown.

Hello from the porch of the main lodge!

Gosh, I missed 'blogging! Those who have tried to reach me will understand that I have very crappy reception here, and internet doesn't go all the way to my front porch so I am largely disconnected. Still, I'll try and update you all on my new job. Of course, this 'blog is not just for you all, it's my own catalog of daily life for my future self, and it's primarily that reason that makes me realize how important it is to keep blogging. Today I hope to take a bunch of photos of where I live for you all, as well as of the new car (and plates!). Oddly enough, I didn't get a registration sticker for my plates at the MVA in Newton yesterday, so here's hoping I don't get pulled over anytime soon. Also on the agenda for today is figuring out whether or not I can swim 550 yards in the lake in an unspecified amount of time. It's actually cool and humid out, so not the best day for getting in the lake, but I'd rather not waste time tomorrow that could otherwise be spent on the ropes course learning high elements if I can't do the qualifying swim. Also, my hair is in my eyeballs, and I am signing up for insurance next Monday.

It's crazy, like training schedules always are, but it;s beautiful here, I have a cabin to myself and it's massive, the shower sucks and of course there is not as much down time as in other jobs, but hopefully this evens out with the fall's schedule. I'm sitting in a pavilion being sneaked up upon by a vast quantity of geese, and also I am going to learn to bear-bag, FINALLY. I'm missing a few comforts of home but not a lot, and I'm eager to strike a balance where I am happy healthy and well-rested. Tonight is the last night in my new home for the next four nights, I am super excited to be able to sleep in my own bed again when that is all over. I've got less than a week left here in Baltimore, I'm planning to head up in a day or two to get a PA or NJ license, pick up the new car, and all that good stuff. NJ may be easiest but I have no proof of residency anyplace other than california, which is somewhat annoying. Also annoying is getting insurance squared away, which I certainly want for picking my car up. Hooray!

I picked a car yesterday! It's a white Toyota Matrix, and is in Allentown, PA now, where I'm using the Miners household as a permanent address. I have to go up sometime next week to get my PA license so I can get the car titled at the dealership. "The PBC encourages visits by friends and family of staff members. Visitors' access to Center facilities will be determined by the needs of the program(s) at the Center at that time. All such visits must be approved by the Program Coordinator(s) or his/her designee. Visitors must check in at the Main Office in Egner Lodge. S/he will be issued a visitor’s badge to be worn conspicuously while on Center property." That means you all! I'm moving in a week! Good-bye's

Even talking to my mom today about the parking situation here at school for commencement next week brought tears to my eyes. People who know me know that I am a crier. I cry when I get frustrated. I cry when I'm stressed. But more often than anything else, I feel sad when things end. I cried when my mom and dad got rid of our old burgundy Volvo station wagon. I cried when I "graduated" from Mrs. Cutler's 1-3rd grade class. I cried again when I missed field day to go check out a new school, and then I cried two years later when I switched back to my old elementary school. I tried for months to figure out a way to stay at the art high school I went to south east of Washington, DC when my dad wanted to move the family cross-country. Well, we moved anyway, and I cried. I cried when I left the high school I ended up graduating from, a small intimate program that I spent my senior year at in Southern California. I even remember the end of the summer before I started MICA, being in the car with my costuming mentor and good friend Randy, and thinking as we drove down a mountainside to the haunted theatre in Santa Paula, we're never going to get to spend as much time together as we have this past two years. Every year, I tend to be one of the first people back on-campus, and one of the last people to leave. Some of it is my lack of organization in moving, but some of it, too, is that I don't want experiences to end. As a camp counselor, I always head up for work week, to get there before everyone else does, and tend to leave with the last round of campers. And now, my time at MICA is coming to an end, and I can't say this has been the most productive couple of semesters here, but I'm sad to go. I suppose it just takes me a little while to acclimate. I like some time to figure out what the pecking order is, where I stand. Now, I find myself graduating. Have I met my chair's expectations of me at a earlier point? Probably not. I remember at one point feeling been there, done that, I'm the expert, and now I know more than ever how much I haven't done, how little I do know.

Things I will go back in time and tell myself*

Communicating in different ways with eachother, not all verbal i grew up in a diverse area, i've never met a person I couldn't get along with I have experiences being both a minority race and culture and being in the majority, I prefer in-between. handling mistakes what are you most of? What's not on your resume? drawing as communications sudden change in leadership or staff conflict with values of leadership staff forgot to mention that i'm a dork and read inside higher ed and chronicle could have discussed more development theory could have told about experiences with non-at-risk-youth and desire for greater challenge to skills as a facilitator.

Beginning of the end.

There's something my friend Blue said during the last few weeks of camp last year, and it holds true. It's important, whether it's your first week of counseling or the very last, that for someone it's their first; Finishing strong is so important. It seems like I didn't really do that at MICA. Did I grow as an artist, finish and bring unity to my work in the last year? Not really. If anything, the stuff is more all-over the place, divergent, sprawling and meandering (in a bad way). I'm starting to get the final set of critiques from my instructors, and I've got to say we're both dissapointed. As much studying of Zen I've done in the past year, I have not lived in the moment--with my feet tucked under comforters and my eyes cast off into the distance, I've stumbled through this last year. Today I have the first interview for a full-time job, and I am thankful for the opportunity.

Oral storytelling

I am totally addicted to listening to mp3 recordings from The Stoop. This American Life, hosted by the sultry and seductive Ira Glass, along with storytelling nights in other major cities, is largely responsible for the active storytelling scene being enjoyed by our country, and by our amazing Charm City, too. Though we think that TAL has done a little shark-jumping since their cable TV series came out. But we still love you, Ira. The intro for This American Life works well to introduce The Stoop: "Every [show] we choose a theme, and present [seven seven-minute] stories about this theme." Laura Lippman of the Baltimore Sun and several non-fiction titles (on the topic of failure at The Stoop): See, that's the thing--failure is kind of beautiful. Failure is spectacular. Failure is memorable. Failure is Lucille Ball in the candy factory and the conveyor belt is backing up and she's putting chocolate in her apron and chocolate in her bra and chocolate in her mouth, and she's fired by the end of the shift. Failure is a story, every time you tell it it gets better. What's really bad is mediocrity, which is private and boring. Mediocrity is like body odor or a piece of toilet paper stuck to your shoe. Mediocrity is something that happens behind a closed door most of the time. If you enjoyed the Black Panther:Rank & File symposium and exhibit, you'll enjoy Marc Steiner's storytelling of a generation before mine in cities all across America working together for revolution and to fill the needs of their fellow men.
